Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty: A Comprehensive Guide

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, commonly called a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen. This procedure also tightens the abdominal muscles to create a flatter, more contoured stomach.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Both men and women seeking a flatter abdomen and increased self-confidence can benefit from a tummy tuck. It’s ideal for those with sagging skin due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging. A tummy tuck helps improve the appearance of the stomach when diet and exercise aren’t enough.

Procedure Details

The full tummy tuck, performed under general anesthesia, lasts two to three hours. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision along the bikini line, from hip to hip. They then lift the abdominal skin, tighten the underlying muscles, and remove excess fat. The belly button is repositioned through a new incision.

For those with less skin to remove, a mini-tummy tuck may be an option. This procedure uses a smaller incision and does not move the belly button. An extended tummy tuck addresses excess skin on both the abdomen and flanks but leaves more noticeable scars.

Recovery

After surgery, patients often stay in the hospital for one to two nights. Bandages and drainage tubes manage fluid buildup. It’s important to avoid vigorous activities for several weeks. Patients should wear a supportive bandage and take time off work for recovery. Sutures are usually removed after about 10 days.

Risks

Like any surgery, a tummy carries risks. These include infection, slow wound healing, fluid accumulation, numbness, visible scarring, blood clots, and potential damage to internal organs. Choosing a skilled surgeon and following preoperative and postoperative care instructions can help minimize these risks.
