Dr. Ajit Kumar Banerji is a pioneering figure in the field of neurosurgery in India, celebrated for his extensive contributions to the discipline over several decades. A former chief of the Neurosciences Center at AIIMS, New Delhi, he played a crucial role in establishing the department of neurosurgery in 1965, building it from the ground up. He served as the director of the Neurosciences Center until 1995 and was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor at AIIMS, a testament to his dedication and influence in the field. Dr. Banerjee is recognized as the first Indian to specialize in microneurosurgery, contributing to the development of critical surgical techniques such as aneurysm surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and transphenoidal surgery.
In 1988, he founded VIMHANS (Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences), India’s first private center dedicated to mental health and neurosurgery. He continues to impact the field as an Emeritus Consultant at Apollo Hospital, where he joined in 2007. Dr. Banerjee’s expertise and leadership have fostered the growth of various neurosurgical subspecialties, and his legacy is honored through orations named after him by prestigious medical societies.
